Nutrition Programs
Autism, ADHD and ADD
As parents, we want the best for our children. If you are parenting a child who is neurodiverse – whether related to autism, ADHD, ADD, or another neurological difference – it can come with extra layers of complexity to navigate in order to ensure your child feels their best.
The autistic and otherwise neurodivergent community is particularly sensitive to diet.
The underlying factors leading to behaviours, symptoms, and/or health concerns are very different from child to child. Some potential root causes may include digestive issues, food intolerance/allergies, difficulties detoxifying, metabolic imbalances, gut dysbiosis and nutrient deficiencies. We wrote more about where to start with Nutrition & Autism here. It is so important to assess the individual child and develop a customized nutrition program based on their specific challenges and needs.
Challenges
Children with autism or ADD/ADHD may experience can be influenced by the foods they eat (or don’t eat), such as:
- Cognitive and behavioral issues
- Poor language skills and eye contact
- Difficulties socializing with their peers
- Skin problems
- Aggression and defiant behavior
- Pain
- Difficulty maintaining focus and attention
- Picky eating or food cravings
- Digestive problems
There has been extensive research on nutrition and children on the spectrum, with ADHD/ADD and other neurological differences. There are numerous therapeutic diets identified to be effective with this population. However, a diet that may be extremely helpful for one child can be disastrous for another. An individualized approach is absolutely critical.
